They'd never see it coming

Thought inspired by seeing the DaVinci Code trailer: when adapting books into films, particularly those of a suspenseful nature, why don't more directors change the ending? All those people who've read the book and think they know what to expect would actually get their money's worth.

Maybe because the director or screenwriter couldn't come up with a better ending than the original author themselves? Also, I would guess that in most cases (DaVinci not being one of them), the number of people who actually read the book the movie was based on is low enough that it doesn't matter that much.

Just thoughts.
